Operation Jigsaw
The Comstock cemeteries are filled with unstable and/or broken headstones. Some stones we are not able to repair as pieces have been stolen over the years. The CCF board estimates nearly 80 percent of all Comstock headstones are in need stabilization ranging from extensive to minor repairs. Over the years pieces of stones have been moved, reused in unrelated plots, or tossed outside the fence line. This makes repairs in the Comstock cemeteries much like a jigsaw puzzle.

Four years ago the CCF board developed a plan for Operation Jigsaw; stone repairs in the Comstock cemeteries. The scope of work required getting a trained project manager who is certified in Jahn restoration mortar (Cathedral Stone), obtain a storage trailer, and conduct a full assessment of all markers in all cemeteries; Mission Accomplished. And today, Operation Jigsaw is headed up by director Cal Dillon, certified in Jahn Restoration Mortars as a technician and the project manager. To date approximately 300 stones have been repaired and/or stabilized. Two of Mr. Dillon’s most challenging and rewarding repair jobs are pictured here.

Silver City cemetery will be on the project priority list this year and repairs will begin in that cemetery sometime in late June or early July. Operation Jigsaw volunteers, mostly repeat volunteers, start out each Saturday morning at 8am and work until around noon throughout the summer months.  Check calendar for specific information each week or email
info_grave@comstockcemetery.com for details.

The cost of gravesite repairs can range from $55 to well over $5000 depending on the issues. You may donate specifically to Operation Jigsaw; see “How you can help”. A small contribute can allow for a full individual gravesite to be stabilized.
